Hello,

i have a question about my niece, she is 15 and has been seeing an adult man in his 20's and now she is pregnant, her mother gave written permission for her daughter(15 years old) to see this man, what can i or some other family member in the state of NY do about this? This can not be legal? What can we do? I need help, she is beyond the point where a abortion can be done, please help!

Re: pregnant niece

This is a very difficult situation and the mother's attitude is difficult for me to appreciate. 15 and pregnant by a 20 something boyfriend is a disasterous way to begin a life.

I don't know the best way to handle this to assist the young lady. Start with an appointment with the District Attorney.

Adoption is a practical, but likely unpopular, solution.

Good luck.

Re: pregnant niece

It is illegal for an adult to engage in sexual relations with a 15 year old and therefore going to the District Attorney is an option. However, sending the man to jail isn't sgoing to support the baby. A better option may be to make sure the child is acknowledged and cared for. If the man refuses to support his child, he can be (and should be) sued for child support once the child is born.

Should you like to discuss this or any other legal matter, you can call my office to schedule an appointment for a consultation or in the alternative, I can be reached for on-phone low-cost legal consultation at 1-800-275-5336 x0233699.
