How do I protect myself...
I am about to marry a man who has a vindictive x-wife. She basically believes she should get whatever she wants and constantly torments my fience. I am feeling as though after we get married, she is going to take him back to court to get more money and attempt to have my income included. Currently we are thinking of trying to get custody of the children but because of the way the courts are in NY what should we do? Can we protect ourselves. My future husband is constantly going out of his way for her, he even appeared in court when she was evicted from her apartment. Then she turns around and calls him a bastard. What can we do? Who do we talk to?

You could file for custody, or a change in support arrangments.
I would also consider encouraging your soon-to-be-husband to get some type of counseling. If the ex is as abusive as you say, and he goes out of his way for her, there may be something else, outside of the legal realm, which can help.
