Ran out of money

His attorney, after doing a bum job, and after failing to get him to sign away his rights to his ex-spouse of 29yrs.pension fund, has flown the coup. Now He is faced with a trail for equitable distribution, the Judge refuse to let him do a discovery on his ex-wife, even after he had proof that she file a networth statement that understated her income by

$30,000, and claimed $100,000 worth of debts. He needs to know can he ask the court to appoint him an attorney or can he get his ex-wife to help him pay for one. The trial for grounds only is over and done with, the Judge has signed the divorce decree, giving his wife the apartment, terminating any interest he had in the appartment, awarded child support that is 20% of his gross income and stated he has no claim for maintenance.

Wow. This is a sad situation.

You don't get assigned counsel in New York in a matrimonial case. You can, however, petition for attorney's fees from the other side. You need to find an attorney who is willing to take your case knowing your financial situation. Don't go in alone, equitable distribution is far too complex. Call your local bar association.
