Legal Question in Family Law in New York

What is a reasonable time for opposing counsel to ask for an extension to respond with Opposition Papers to a motion? One week? Two weeks? I cannot see how a month is a reasonable time when by law they are supposed to have only what, 9 days pursuant to CPLR 2214, but I was just curious what the attorneys on this website thought in their experience was a reasonable time?

It depends upon the circumstances - but one month is not inordinate.

Is the motion complex? Is it summer time, and are people on vacation? Is the attorney working on multiple cases?

Not granting extended time on a motion is discorteous and will result in the attorney seeking additional time through the court - at which point the judge will have to rule - and you'll look like a jerk...
