Legal Question in Family Law in New York

Can I represent along with my son in child custody court. Also my son called the court befor e the date set and asked for it to be changed to later, the clerk said ok, but when he got ther 1 1/2 after the orginal set time....she said oops to late now what can he do?? she got full custody. I will file whatever papers in the court to make it all legally right. Help
