Legal Question in Family Law in New York

Requesting Court for Early Release of Support Obligations

NY child support ends at 21 or on a case-by-case situation. What are my chances of requesting judge to end my obligation of child support, and a percentage of oop meds, by stating child just this month graduated HS, is 20 years old, is not interested in college, and is able to work full time, has own car; keeping in mind I never skipped a week of support in all 20 years. It was brought into the system because mother wanted an increase and it was granted at $20 more each week! Why would the judge say no and could this backfire on me in any way? Thank you.

Re: Requesting Court for Early Release of Support Obligations

You will probably NOT succeed in ending child support prior to age 21.

If you are the non custodial parent, it is unlikely the Court will grant your Petition to have your child declared emancipated prior to the NY "legal maturation" age of 21.

GOOD LUCK,
