Returning an Engagement Ring

If a man and woman living together become engaged when he purchases a ring for her, and then he subsequently breaks off the engagement asking her to move out of his house, is she obligated under NYS law to return the engagement ring?

Hi:

I am sorry for your situation.

Unfortunately, under the old property law if the ring was given for a promise to marry and there is no marriage, legally you should return

the ring.

However, if you both have had a decent relationship, perhaps something can be worked out between the both of you.
