Legal Question in Family Law in New York

I have been separated from my husband for 5 months. I moved out of our married home and am renting my own apartment. I did not remove any of my personal and pre-marital possessions from the house until Oct 31. I was unable to pack and move everything from the house so I still have many things there. My dilemma is that my husband refuses to answer any of my calls, I cannot leave a message as his mailbox "is full", he has changed the locks on the doors and I don't know how to go about retrieving my belongings. Is there any legal action that I can take? I do not have any money for an attorney (I left there with nothing but the job that I was lucky enough to get) - but I feel that there should be some kind of court order that I could get. I will not go to the house alone. I do not feel safe when I am alone with him. This man has caused me endless mental anguish, verbal abuse as well as physical. He actually packed all of my previous work clothes (suits, etc.) and donated them to the Salvation Army. He has broken many items that are irreplaceable as they were things given to me by my mother who passed away 18 yrs ago. Please if you have any kind of advice as to the direction I should be taking here I would be extremely grateful. Sincerely, Toni

Why did you leave your house? You have just as much right to it as he has. You also have a right to your property and perhaps spousal support. You need a lawyer, and it may be possible to force him to pay for it and to leave the house. Stop being his doormat and call a lawyer at least legal aid. You deserve more than you are getting! Good luck!
