Legal Question in Family Law in New York

separation & child custody

I'm married and living with my husband in albany NY with our two young children. We've lived here for almost 2yrs. I want a legal separation due to the verbal,emotional abuse my husband has put me through. I want to move back to my parents who live in Rochester NY with my kids (4hrs away) I'm currently a homemaker and have zero money. My husband works full time. What steps do I first need to take to pursue a legal separation and be able to take the kids with me when I move out. If we had joint custody, how would that work living 4hrs apart? One of my children will be attending kindergarden next year, my youngest is only 1yr old
