Legal Question in Family Law in New York

Separation

My husband was physically and mentally abusive towards me. One day, after a fight, I gained the strength and threatened if he hit me I would call the police. There is a long history of fights and abuse. He left the house, and told me it was all my fault and he did not want to come back or help me financially. He now spreads lies to his family that he never did anything and that I threatened to ruin his reputation. I have been taken to the hospital at least 10 times, but never filed a complaint with the police. I can support myself, but it has become a burden. For religious reasons, I cannot obtain a divorce. What are my rights?

Re: Separation

You can either:

1) Suffer in silence.

2) Get an Order of Protection.

3) Obtain a Judicial Decree of Separation.

I do not recommend the first option.
