Separation

I recently separated from my wife of 3 years, I left the family apartment, am I still responsible for paying the rent being that my wife does not work, and what are my responsibilities to her now that I am gone. There are no children involved in this marriage.

Re: Separation

In New York, a married person has a duty to support his/her spouse. Thus, a court may require you to pay your wife's living expenses until she becomes self-supporting.

If you are the co-signer on the lease agreement, you are responsible for paying the rent. In general terms, you are responsible for joint debts. If you need further assistance, feel free to call my office.
