Legal Question in Family Law in New York

been served divorce papers

I cant afford a lawyer to answer for the divorce, can i go to the court and answer to the complaint myself

You could, but you may want to at least consult with an attorney first. Consultation is a lot less costly than representation.

You do not "go to court" to Answer. You must Answer in writing and file it with the court and serve it on your spouses attorney.
