Legal Question in Family Law in New York

I have been served notice of divorce from my husband, living in the same house, stating that he want divorce as wife is abusive to me and give me mental torture...etc. respond to 20 days, I do not want divorce, how its possible? I have to go out of country soon. Can I get an extention to response the notice? Do I have to hire attorney for the whole divorce????????? or I can hire for the steps taken towards divorce?

You can hire a lawyer for whatever steps you want, but moist importantly, you need to respond within 20 days or else you risk losing by default.
