Sharing custody from different states

How is joint custody shared when the parents live in two different states.

Joint custody only means that you share the decision making, regarding education, major medical and religion. So in essence, the parents may have joint custody even if they live in different states. Joint custody is not necessarily joint physical custody unless the order specifies that.
