Legal Question in Family Law in New York

sole custody

My ex husband and I had joint custody of our son as per our divorce agreement. I have just been given sole custody of my child. I am a bit confused as to what that actually means. The main reason I went to court was to protect my child from the possibility of his father (who is a drug addict)coming to the school and taking him with out my knowledge.

What does Sole custody actually mean? Does sole custody allow me to deny his father access to picking him up at the school if I believe he is on drugs? If not, how do I go about doing this?

My ex is non-violent and lives 20 hours away and we are on friendly terms. At this time, he is not a threat in any way, but drugs can do strange things to people...

Thank You

Re: sole custody

When you were awarded custody was he granted visitation rights?

If the order says "liberal visitation" you may seek a visitation schedule in which the days, times and locations are set. You and him may come to an agreement on this. The schedule should be approved by the court.
