Legal Question in Family Law in New York

My son has received a large product liability settlment. Me and his mom were together and suffered the damages along with my daughter for 3 years. It now seems her new husband and child who had no involvement in the incident and did not know my son until he was 3, are the ones benefitting. We broke up when child turned 3, i have joint custody, should I have more say, benefits? She was pursuing the case behind my back, i found out because i was needed for deposition. I fought my way to get some money from the parents share. But it doesn't seem right (legal)that her new husband/child, out-benefit me and my daughter whose lives were ruined, because she has primary residence. Help?
