Legal Question in Family Law in New York

My spouse is moving to have a court appointed referee oversee the remainder of our divorce, but I am not sure what that means. Why would my spouse not wish for the judge who is familiar with our case to continue presiding over it? What is a court appointed referee? If I just want to stay with the current judge that we have is it reasonable for me to oppose this?

Think of the referee like the Judge's helper. A decision by the Court appointed referee must be approved by the Judge. This is normally done with a motion.
