Re: steps in a divorce

In NY, you need grounds for a divorce.

If you have them and your spouse will not contest, you can file for an uncontested divorce. Forms available on NY Unified Court web site.

If you do not have grounds, you will need a LEGAL separation (need an atty and your spouses agreement) and after living apart for one year pursuant to this written legal agreement, you can get a conversion divorce.

If your spouse will not cooperate with the divorce...you will need an attorney.
