what are the first steps to take in divorce or separation

My brother is separating from his wife and they want to divorce. She wants the house, the car, she wants him to continue to pay half the mortgage and pay the tuition for their 13 year old son. What are his rights and what should he do? She earns a decent salary and she is drowning him.
