Legal Question in Family Law in New York
When does the support start
A friend says she has a child that was born 10 yrs ago and says I am the father. If this is the case do I owe support for those ten years or as of the time paternity is established. Why me?

You can ask for paternity tests.
You would be expected to support the kid.
She can ask for child support since the day the child was born. The Judge will decide if you have to pay any retroactive child support. Normally the Judge will only go back approx. 4 years.
Let me know if you need any help.

Re: When does the support start
Assuming that you never acknowledged or even knew that this child existed; and you were living and working, in State, in open view......
It is likely Child Support will be decided as due, from the date the Petition for Support is filed. The Filiation or Paternity Petition, that will be included with the Child Support Petition, will be decided first, by testimony and/or blood tests, if you do not Consent to be declared the "natural" father.
This situation is not as unusual as you may believe. I've known "father's" who bumped into near adult children on the street, that they never knew existed. They recognized them by the strong resembelence.
Some women choose not to be "burdened" by the man who impregnates them. Yes, very much like the black widow and queen bee.
Hope it works out for you.
