Legal Question in Family Law in New York

thousands were paid out for a lawyer that did nothing he said he was to do, and my x had free ones...she is unfit, as my daughter misses alot of school and she goes without eating, she is also dirty alot... but my x has custody..i cannot afford another lawyer..how do i get custody without a lawyer?

There is no way to tell you that. If you need a lawyer ask the court again, otherwise you should consider borrowing the money.
