Legal Question in Family Law in New York
She has totally stopped loving me after finding out she's pregnant...
We found out she's pregnant and now she has totally stopped loving me after a year of being in what I thought was complete Happiness.
She is definitely going through with the pregnancy and keeps telling me she doesn't want anything to do with me. Her family has urged her to sign away my rights to the un-born child. She herself has said that she wouldn't come after me for money & that I should just sign away this un-born child. I've tried everything to find the love we once shared to no avail.
I feel now that I should take her up on what she & her family has said and see if any of the above is even possible. Please I need help. Heartbroken & Confused.

First, she cannot "sign away your rights." Only you can and Second, you cannot sign away your obligation to provide child support for the child, you can only sign away your paternal rights of custody, and visitation. You should not do anything while you are conflicted or hurt, it may to have someone represent your interests in a time of extreme emotional distress.
Should you like to discuss this or any other legal matter, you can e-mail me for more information about low cost face-to-face, on-line, or a telephone consultation with a lawyer in our office.

I disagree with Mr. Loeb. Although NY law unequivocally provides that both parents are obligated to support a child, there may be agreements regarding support, adoption, etc. which, depending on the circumstances, can eliminate all or most of your exposure to liability for support. I suggest that you fully discuss this situation and all of the custody, visitation and support issues with a qualified family law attorney right away. Your actions at and near the time of the child's birth can have severe and long-lasting consequences.
