Legal Question in Family Law in New York

Transfer of dog ownership

I am adopting a dog from somebody

and I want to obtain legal rights to

the dog. (Some sort of document to

acknowledge the transfer of

ownership in the event that the

current owner wants the dog back)

Can i draw up a simple transfer of

ownership document for both sides to

sign?

Would a notarized letter suffice? If

so what steps should i take?

Re: Transfer of dog ownership

A dog is property - like a car, chair or shoes. Therefore, a bill of sale should be sufficient.

If the dog is not being sold but gifted, a letter gifting the dog to you should be sufficient. I would have a notary acknowledge the individual that signed the letter (made the gift).
