Legal Question in Family Law in New York
Troubled Child
I have a daughter who is 17, refuses to go to school or look for employment. She does not contribute in any way to the upkeep of the household, not even doing household chores. Plans to live and sponge off family ''until you get the lawyers to kick me out''. What can we do?

This really is not a legal question. However, I would contact your local department of social services and speak to a social worker about your child's behavior.

Re: Troubled Child
While the legal system may not be the best way to resolve this problem with a troubled youth, the law can provide limited assistance. Has the 'truancy office' of the high school been contacted? Further, it is possible to have a minor be dclared 'emancipated' and therefore eligible to be 'evicted' (the actual legal term is 'ejected') from your home. These are creative solutions best applied if the child refuses counseling. In NYC Jewish Family Services among many others offers low cost (almost free)counseling. The dept of social services may also be able to assist. You are welcome to a consultation at no charge at my offices at 42 west 44th st, ny,ny. Please call first for an appointment 646-591-5786.
