Legal Question in Family Law in New York

Unmarried Couples and Custody

I am wondering what the legal rights are of both the woman and the man in the situation where the woman is pregnant, but the couple is unmarried and not living together. In New York State, does the woman have to file any paperwork in order to have sole custody and what obligation if any is there to the father without his taking legal action?

In order to define the relationships after the baby is born, it is a good idea to go to court. The father is obligated to support the child until it reaches the age of majority.

When the child is born you must either make an arrangement with the mother and/or file for custody in court.
