Legal Question in Family Law in New York
My Wife Wants a Separation...Now What?
Within the last 2 weeks my wife announced her intention of wanting a separation. So what do I do now? I have never been divorced and no one in my family's been divorced. I don't have a lawyer and don't know of any. As far as money goes I don't have much of that anywhere either. So far all parties have been civil and have been willing to work together. We rent and have no major property between us. We do have 2 children ages 4 and 6 however. I need to know what should I do know that she has given me this news? No...nobody has an attorney yet.

You may wish to offer to go to marrige counseling with her.
It couldn't hurt and just might help.

You might want to consider mediation if you can both be civil to each other. In mediation the parties make their own decisions with a mediator presiding over the focus of the agreement - and then have the agreement reviewed by individual attornies for the parties. It works very well in many situations. The alternative is to find a divorce lawyer and have them work out the details for you - don't try and do it yourselves - there are too many pit-falls to watch out for. Good luck!
