Legal Question in Family Law in New York

My wife wants to seperate and for me to leave the house. I do not want to stay just to make her mad but I have been told I should not leave. Is it true, if I leave she can hold that against me when it comes time on decieding custody/visitation. We have two kids who would stay in the house with her.
