in new York state, if the child you are paying child support for is under twenty-one years of age but lives on their own in another state, does the child support money still go to the custodial parent/

You need to file a petition to have your child support terminated based upon the emancipation of the child. Otherwise the child support order continues with payments made directly to the custodial parent.
