DOES NEW YORK STATE RECOGNIZE COMMON LAW MARRIAGES IN DEFINING THE TERM "SPOUSE"
Does New York State recognize Common Law marriages as legal to define the term "Spouse"? Are Common Law marriages legal in the State of New York?

NYS does not recognize common law marriage. However, NY does recognize common law marriages entered into in another State that recognizes CL marriages. EG, say you lived in Calif. for 8 years with your boy/girlfriend and held yourself out as husband and wife. You move to NY together. NY will most likely recognize your CL marriage entered into in Calif.
