Legal Question in Civil Litigation in New York

Name change with marriage

i applied for a marriage license in

NYC. my name is currently Jane Ellen

Smith. My fiancees last name is

jones. i wanted to change my name

to Jane Smith Jones. (Dropping Ellen

and taking Smith as my middle

name) The NYC office would not let

me do this and now my marriage

license says Jane Ellen Smith-Jones.

They told me i need to go to civil

court to change, but i dont live in

NYC i live in NJ. and to go to the civil

court i have to be a NY resident. How

can i change this? If so how? Can i

do it before the wedding or do i have

to wait until After the wedding? What

would be the procedure. Please

help!!!

Re: Name change with marriage

Mike.
