Legal Question in Civil Litigation in New York

E-mail and Libel Laws

I worked as an independent contractor for a comapny based in NY. After leaving I received a call regarding rumors about my departure as well as other departures from the company. I forwarded an e-mail to other independent contractors repeating the rumors and told them to beware, and to make sure they keep their eyes open. I then sent a second e-mail and stated I was wrong to repeat rumors and should not have done so.

Five days later, the company's attorney called me and said a copy of the e-mail was forwarded to him and I was in trouble because I violated libel laws.

In repeating unsubstantiated rumors, did I commit libel?

Not unless they convince a jury.
