employee notice

how does an emplyer need to give as motice before firing someone?

my employer hired me a month and a half ago and just gave me a notice (orally) on no specific grounds.

He told me two weeks ago and wants me to leave at the end of this week. He says he will give me a week's salary as compensation. Is this legal?

Also, he had claimed (which turned out not to be true) to have installed security cameras withing the office where I work alone.Is this legal?

If you are a member of a union these matters should be covered by your labor contract.

If you are a private employee unless you have an employment contract spelling out the rights and responsibilities of the parties an employee can be fired (or quit) without notice and it is legal to install video surveillance in non-private areas (no bathrooms).

So long as you were not fired for an illegal reason or purpose your termination is not actionable.
