can they fire you under?

is it legal for an employer to lay-off an employee after their maternity leave is up and they called the employer with some adjustments and on a start back date but was written back that their duties were allocated amongest other employees and they are no longer needed.

The answer may depend upon the total number of employees that your former employer had. If the employer had at least 15 employees, then its actions may very well be governed by federal law. If less than 15, then New York law may govern.
