Legal Question in Civil Litigation in New York

Lending money

Friend of mine borrowed some money from their friends,and didnt pay them back on time,he signed agreement with them,now he wants to pay back but his friends change address,and he cannot contact them anyhow.Is there any legal action posible against him and if there is , could result in jail time?he owes about 1000$.

There is no jail for a civil issue.
