Legal Question in Civil Litigation in New York

libel?

A person makes an allegation to me during a conversation. I make that allegation pulic without

citing wether the allegation is true

or false, I make public only that the allegation was made and what the allegation was concerning a 3rd party. Is this libel?Defamation?

If the allegation is false and defamatory about a third party, you have defamed that person. If your making it public is verbal, it's slander. If it was written it's libel.

The only qualification of the above would be as to who the third party is - and who you are. There are different rules for public figures, and somewhat different rules for media defendants.

It is slander.

But you should think about whether or not you would like to go to a lawyer. No lawyers take these cases on a contingency basis and it will cost you money to put this matter into suit.

Unless you lost money cause of this, I would let this die.
