Legal Question in Civil Litigation in New York

Loan Repayment

Hello, im upset because i received a letter from a law firm representing a man who claims i owe him $3500, although i never met or spoke to this man. He was a freind of my elderly mother. My mother told me a few weeks ago that she borrowed $3500 from this man, and was unable to repay it, and he was harrassing her on the phone and banging on her door. There is no loan aggrement in writing, yet the letter states he loaned me $3500 and the law firm is demanding payment or further legal action. What should i do?

Should i contact the law firm by phone or email and tell them i dont know this man personally, and that any loan repayment is my mothers responsibility? Or should i get a lawyer to contact the firm? THanks for any advice.

Re: Loan Repayment

They're not going to go away on your say so but whether you respond personally or by attorney (which would probably be taken more seriously), it is doubtful that the claimant is just going to give up just because you say he has no grounds on which he bases his claim.

Should you like to discuss this or any other legal matter, you can call my office to schedule an appointment for a consultation or in the alternative, I can be reached for on-phone low-cost legal consultation at 1-800-275-5336 x0233699.
