Legal Question in Civil Litigation in New York

Long story but I had gotten an apt thru a church outreach last year , friend of the person who works there. lost my job and now being evicted this person at the outreach has bad mouthed me to all the parishes in my area which is embrassering. I am reporting her to her boss but is this illegal that she has given out my personal information and has made it impossible for me to get any help whatsoever.

The person at the outreach (let's call her "OP") hasn't violated the law. To the contrary, free speech is one of the hallmarks of American society. The real question is, can you recover money from that person?

The legal answer is "yes." The practical answer is "doubtful."

You have two viable causes of action against OP: Tortious Interference with Prospective Business Relations and Defamation.

A lawsuit for these causes would take years and OP probably has no money or assets in any case. You can only garnish a small portion of wages and most peoples homes are protected from foreclosesure by the Homestead Act.

While I can't speak for all attorneys, I wouldn't touch the case with a ten-foot pole.

I wish I had a more optimistic answer. Best of luck.

Marshall
