Legal Question in Civil Litigation in New York

Parent's legal responsibility

My 15 year old son walks 2 dogs for a neighbor who says the dogs are too much for her to walk. One of the dogs slipped from his collar while being walked and was hit by a van. What are the parents legal responsibilities toward the vet bills?

Re: Parent's legal responsibility

Generally, a parent can not be held liable for negligently supervising a child. There are two exceptions: (1) A parent may be liable if his or her child has a tendency to engage in vicious conduct and the parent is aware of that tendency and (2) where a parent entrusts a dangerous instrument to a child.

My opinion is that you aren't legally responsible for the vet bills. However, I wouldn't take this to the bank just yet. Judges often do whatever they want regardless of what the law provides.
