Legal Question in Civil Litigation in New York

Question RE: Background Checks and what appears on them

I recently paid a fine to a store as a civil responsibility due to return fraud. No criminal charges were pressed and I simply just sent my payment to Loss Prevention after receiving a letter. Will this civil matter show up on a Background check that an employer may run? Or would this be considered a matter that was settled privately as I didn't go to court?

It wouldn't come up as a criminal conviction, but whether it comes up in your history is really up to the store as to whether they take the time and energy to record the settlement of this matter. Couldn't say definitive it wouldn't come up, but chances are it won't. The key is not to lie about it.
