Legal Question in Civil Litigation in New York

I received a notice from the post office that I have a certified letter (return receipt) for a civil court action against me. I believe I am being sued for $850. What happens if I don't pick up the letter and don't appear in court?

You will lose the case and the other side will win by default. The court will likely enter a judgment against you, and you won't have the opportunity to present any defenses. This is a very, very bad idea.
