Legal Question in Civil Litigation in New York

Do I have any recourse when someone files a false complaint?

I received a registered letter today from my town attorney that a neighbor reported to them I have an illegal apartment in my home. I absolutely do not! I recently added an addition to my home (all completed legally) and after many town inspections, recieved my CO approx. 1 1/2 yrs ago. I now have an open case with the town for additional inspections of the premises. I have lived here over 18 yrs and have no idea who would have reported such a thing. The town will not disclose who filed the complaint.

If the complaint is patently false and was filed intentionally, with malice, to harass an individual, then there may be a cause of action for abuse of process.
