Legal Question in Civil Litigation in New York

release for pictures

My company found out that I took pictures of a contractor working for our company using unsafe work practices.The safety supervisor inform me that i should not give the pictures to the union or anyone else without a release from the contractor or i could be legally responsable for damages. Is this true? or is this some sort of idle threat.

If you are working in New york, it's not true, but they can make your life difficult.
