I work in a field where integrity and honesty is a must, I reciently learned that a person in my company has been spreading rumors that could have serious affects on my carreer, due to the fact that they directly address my honesty in the workplace. I have a wittness who will testify to these statements made against me. What can i do to defend my name?

Re: Slander

Immediate action should be to see a lawyer.

How you proceed can only be determined after

a consultation in which all of the very detailed facts necessary to support a libel or slandar claim in New York have been ascertained.

Re: Slander

Here is what you might do:

If you do not already have a working relationship with an attorney, you can call the Bar Association in the county where you live and ask for Lawyer Referral.

For a truly nominal fee [in my region it is $15.00, I think & that is likely state-wide] you will obtain a consultation with an attorney who has identified him/herself as knowledgeable in the specific issues you seek to learn more about. Such a consultation should provide you with adequate information for you to begin to 'intelligently' weigh your options.

Try this approach - it seems to me you have next to nothing to lose, and - who knows - perhaps much to gain {even if only to the extent of having a clear understanding of why/how it wouldn't be worth your time/effort/money to pursue it.}
