Legal Question in Civil Litigation in New York

Therapist who got my name wrong is taking me to court.

After six months of therapy sessions, my final bill appeared with the wrong first name on it, in my therapist's handwriting. Given that my main reason for seeing her was problems with self-esteem, I felt this was clumsy and unforgivable, so I never paid the bill (I barely make enough to afford it anyway). I recently wrote her a letter explaining this. Now she's taking me to small claims court for $400. For my dignity's sake, I'd like to appear in court rather than respond to the threat by sending her a check. If I defend myself, do I have any sort of a case?

Thank you so much!
