How long after a civil suit is filed, does the plantiff have before the case is dissmissed?

Well, first, let's ensure that we're talking about the right parties here. The plaintiff is the party that files the lawsuit and the defendant is the party being sued.

That said, the plaintiff does not want his lawsuit "dismissed." Rather, the plaintiff wants to win the lawsuit, either after a trial or upon a pre-trial motion.

The length of time it takes from the time a plaintiff files a lawsuit until the time of trial varies considerably on the type of lawsuit, the amount in controversey and the court in which the suit is filed.

That said, it would not be unusual in a typical case for the lawsuit to take a year or more after filing for a trial to occur.
