Legal Question in Immigration Law in New York

I have been in the US for 4 years on a student visa (F-1). I recently graduated from college (June 3rd) and am in the 60 day grace period (within which I am supposed to leave the US). However, I intend to apply to graduate school in the US for spring 2012 and it would be great if I could stay in the US for another few months on a tourist visa (this would help me in the application process, submitting transcripts and getting recommendation letters from my professors here in the US). I might also do a bit of traveling. My sister is also a student here. She is a PhD student and has about 2-3 years remaining for her degree to end. I could stay with here with her during this time if I were to be able to get a tourist visa. My main question is: is it possible to change to a tourist visa (B1/B2) during the grace period and what documents should I submit?
