Legal Question in Immigration Law in New York

Alien Inmate Married to a U.S. Citizen Faces Deportation...

I am a U.S. citizen and married to an inmate in a New York State Correctinal Facility. My husband has basically served his time, and is scheduled for release toward the end of May 2004. On March 31st, he just received a letter from the INS office in Buffalo, NY which was addressed to the facility. The form is called a detainer, and states that an investigation has been launched into whether he can be removed from the United States. I want to know if there is any way we can stop the deportaion. Doesn't it matter that he is married to a U.S. citizen? In helping you to answer my question, it may help to know that this is his second felony conviction...the first resulted in probation and the second resulted in the sentence he is serving now. I have been told by my Husband's counselor at the facility that the immigration hearing will be held at the facility and that we, the family, will have no access to it. Is there anything that can be done on our end? Please help! My husband's release date is May 24th, so I do not have much time if indeed I can do anything at all!
