divorce and immigration

I have friend who married in good faith U.S citizen ,after marriage went to visit her mother in her country ,came back and husband had moved away and did not tell her where,he does get in touch from time to time to demand money be placed in their savings account by her,threating her green card status if she fails to do so ,she would like to divorce him but doesn't want to lose her papers,What can she do?

Your friend may have a viable case under VAWA (Violence Against Women Act). If successful it would allow your friend to obtain a green card without her husband's assistance. These are however complex cases and it would be advisable to speak to an attorney to go over the facts and see if your friend has a good case.
