Legal Question in Immigration Law in New York

What's the earliest date I can legally start working in the U.S. under a H1-B vi

I'm a Canadian who has just been offered a F/T position with a firm in New York. My question to you is in regards to the flexibility of the October 1, 2004 start date. The firm is looking for me to start work in mid September but I was always under the impression that the H1-B visa they are applying on my behalf does not permit me to commence work until at least October 1st. Even if a H1-B visa could be issued for me in time, am I legally allowed to work before Oct.1?? Could you please shed some light on this issue?

Thank you very much.
