Re: g5 visa holder

To change status to any other visa category, a G-5 visa holder must obtain the consent of the U.S. State Department in addition to satisfying other legal requirements. Otherwise, not knowing your specific circumstances I don't know why you believe you would not be able to change status to H-1b if you qualify for that status. In any event, inability to change status should not prevent you from seeking the new visa at a U.S. consulate abroad and then re-entering if you have been in valid legal status throughout your stay in the U.S.

Contact an immigration attorney if you wish to explore your options for a different U.S. visa category.
